A Living Legacy: Historic Stringed Instruments at the Juilliard School $75 Created on the occasion of the Juilliard School’s 100th anniversary in 2005, this book offers an unprecedented look at Juilliard’s historic stringed instrument collection. The collection, assembled over the course of the last century through generous gifts of instruments and funds to the school, is vividly represented by photographic and narrative accounts of 25 instruments (and three bows) of particular historic interest by such illustrious makers as Amati, Bergonzi, Guadagnini, Guarneri, Stradivari, and others, as well as reproductions of historic documents and an annotated list of other instruments and bows. Among the featured instruments are a Stradivarius violin that once belonged to a Russian czar and was later owned by Avery Fisher, a Guarneri del Gesu violin played by a member of the Viennese quartet that premiered many of Beethoven’s and Schubert’s works in that genre, and a Stradivarius cello previously owned by Hugo Becker, head of the Berlin Hochschule fur Musik. Short essays sketch the history of Juilliard and its illustrious string department, and describe the crucial role of the Instrumental Loan Program, which allows students to borrow instruments for special performances and competitions as well as for longer-term use. The book includes a foreword by renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman, a Juilliard alumnus and holder of the school’s Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Chair since 1999. |

Blues Traveler Members: John Popper, Tad Kinchla, Ben Wilson, Brendan Hill, Bobby Sheehan, Chan Kinchla $8.96 Chapters: John Popper, Tad Kinchla, Ben Wilson, Brendan Hill, Bobby Sheehan, Chan Kinchla. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 30. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: John Popper (born March 29, 1967) is an American musician and songwriter. He is most famous for his role as frontman of rock band Blues Traveler performing harmonica, guitar and vocals. He is widely considered a harmonica virtuoso, and is listed by harmonica manufacturer Hohner as a “Featured Artist”, an accolade reserved for only the best and most successful harmonica players. John Popper was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His father was a Hungarian immigrant who escaped Budapest in the 1950s. Through him, Popper is related to David Popper, a nineteenth-century European cellist. Popper was raised in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. He attended Davenport Ridge School, Stamford Catholic High School (now Trinity Catholic High School) and Princeton High School (New Jersey). He took lessons on the piano, the cello, and the guitar, but none of those instruments appealed to him and he hated being forced to practice. He originally wanted to become a comedian, finding he could use humor to make friends and avoid bullies, but when he and a friend performed a routine as The Blues Brothers, he found that he enjoyed musical performance. From there, he took up the harmonica. Popper played trumpet in the Princeton High School Studio Jazz Band, and convinced the teacher to let him play harmonica instead, after an in-class solo on the song “She Blinded Me With Science”. He formed several garage bands with friends in Princeton, New Jersey, one of which evolved into Blues Traveler in 1987. After graduating from high school, the group’s members all moved to New York City, where Popper enrolled in The New School for Social Research. Popper att…More: |

Excerpt: Urban Symphony is an Estonian music group. It represented Estonia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 with the song “Rändajad”, finishing in 6th place with 129 points. This is the best place for Estonia in the contest since 2001. In autumn 2007, Sandra Nurmsalu took part in the singing talent show called 2 takti ette, biennially held by the Eesti Televisioon and broadcast nationwide. In a week of the contest, the contestants were tasked to form bands each on their own and each to produce a performance with it. Nurmsalu had studied the violin for two years in the Georg Ots Music School and had previously arranged the song “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica for a string set of the school. Therefore she decided to use one again. Nurmsalu turned to her former school, where she was introduced to Mann Helstein playing the viola, Johanna Mängel playing the cello, a female contrabass player and a male keyboardist. The band re-scored the song “Hungry” by Kosheen and were pleased with the resulting televised and video recorded live performance. At the end of the series, Nurmsalu, Helstein and Mängel agreed to continue their collaboration. Mängel brought the new cello player Mari Möldre to the band. In the same while, Sven Lõhmus, a music producer invited the group to work with him. The first track the team completed was “Rändajad” for the contest of Eesti Laul, the Estonian selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. The song went on to gain 6th place in the Eurovision final. For this project, Marilin Kongo and Mirjam Mesak joined the group to sing backing vocals. The singer of Urban Symphony is Sandra Nurmsalu. 21-year-old Nurmsalu has two passions singing and violin playing and Urban Symphony has given her the chance to combine these. Ten |

Excerpt: Adagio for Strings is a work for string orchestra , arranged by the American composer Samuel Barber from his String Quartet.Genesis Barber’s Adagio for Strings originated as the second movement in his String Quartet, Op. 11, composed in 1936. Barber was spending a summer in Europe with his partner Gian Carlo Menotti , an Italian composer who was a fellow student at The Curtis Institute of Music ; he composed the Adagio during this time. In the original it follows a violently contrasting first movement, and is succeeded by a brief reprise of this music. In January 1938 Barber sent the piece to Arturo Toscanini . The conductor returned the score without comment, and Barber was annoyed and avoided the conductor. Subsequently Toscanini sent word through a friend that he was planning to perform the piece and had returned it simply because he had already memorized it. It was reported that Toscanini did not look at the music again until the day before the premiere. The work was given its first performance in a radio broadcast by Arturo Toscanini with the NBC Symphony Orchestra on November 5, 1938 in New York. The composer also transcribed the piece in 1967 for eight-part choir , as a setting of the Agnus Dei (“Lamb of God”).Analysis The piece uses an arch form , employing and then inverting , expanding, and varying a stepwise ascending melody . It is in the key of B-flat |
