Is my turkey done cooking?
My mom cooked our turkey for 1 hour at 450, then she lowered the heat to 325 and cooked it for 4 more hours.
We have a 21 lb. turkey (yes, big!) but when we took the stuffing out the inside is dark pinkish, but my mom said that’s just the dark meat part. We put the meat thermometer in it, and it said 160 F. The little red timer on the turkey has popped up though, and the outside of the turkey is dark golden brown and dark brown on other parts.
Is it finished cooking?
When I said 450 and 325 I meant in Fahrenheit.
That seems a little quick for a 21 pound turkey. Turkeys should be cooked for 20 minutes per pound at 325. Starting at 450 is fine, as a big, cold bird in a 325 degree oven will bring that temperature down real quick while it tries to exchange the cool and warm heat. A meat thermometer should read between 165 degrees and 180 degrees. The fact that your red button popped is good, but I wouldn’t rely on that. We just ate our turkey and it was 14.8 pounds. We cooked it at 325 with a start of 450, for 5 hrs. It was juicy and delicious and the thermometer read 175 when I decided to take it out. It cooks some after it comes out of the oven because it is still hot.
